Understanding Your Dental Anxiety

No two patients are the same. That’s one thing we definitely have learned during our years of experience serving Fredericksburg and the surrounding area.

You may feel anxious about dental care for a particular reason, while the next patient may have a completely different reason for feeling uneasy in a dentist chair.

One thing you can do to help yourself is to try to determine the cause or causes of your dental anxiety. Grab some paper and a pen or pencil. You may want to write a few things down. This way, you can bring it with you when you talk to one of our dentists.

When do you begin to feel anxious about dental care? Before you make an appointment? After you’ve made an appointment? When you arrive for your appointment? After you sit down in a dentist chair?

What makes your feel anxious? It could be a particular piece of equipment like a drill or a scaler.

Are you afraid that the dentist may use a needle to administer a local anesthetic to numb part of your mouth?

Along those same lines, are you worried that your dental care may be painful?

Do you have a sensitive gag reflex? Are you worried that you may gag during your dental visit?

Are you concerned about losing control during your dental appointment?

Have you previously had a bad dental experience? If so, can you describe what made it bad?

We aren’t asking this questions to make you feel bad. Any concerns you may feel are understandable. But identifying them will help us work with you to develop a plan that will make it easier for you to receive routine dental cleanings and other treatments.

Call (540) 369-4926 to start by scheduling a consultation.

You Are In Charge Of Your Dental Anxiety

It may not feel like it right now, but you can learn to manage your dental anxiety. With time, your dental anxiety may even disappear. That probably won’t happen overnight, but it is possible.

And the team at the office of Dr. Moss and Dr. Moss want to support you each step of the way.

The first thing we want you to know is that you are in control of what happens. If you want to take a break, we can take a break. If you have a question at any time, feel free to ask your dental professional what they are doing or why they are doing it.

We also know that a few creature comforts can make a difference, too. That’s why we are happy to provide you with a blanket. It’s why we can avoid harsh lighting. It’s why we have televisions in our patient rooms. Watching one of your favorite shows can serve as a distraction while your teeth are being cleaned.

If there is something else we can do or change to help you relax, please let us know.

And if that doesn’t work, we can provide dental sedation as well. Sedation dentistry provides a way for the most fearful or anxious patients to get through an appointment. (You should note that you may need someone to take you home depending on the type of dental sedation that your receive.)

We have also learned that dental sedation can sometimes serve as the way to get your foot in the door. As you become more familiar with our staff, you may find that you no longer need sedation to get through basic dental care.
