Faster Ways To Change Your Smile

How straight are your teeth?

If you wish your teeth were a little straighter, then you will want to continue reading. We will be discussing two kinds of short-term orthodontics that can improve your smile.

If your teeth are absolutely perfectly straight, then today’s post probably isn’t for you.

Traditional braces can do a lot of things, but they can take years to give you the results that you want to see. On the other hand, short-term orthodontics can give you most of the same cosmetic benefits in a fraction of the time.

Our dentists would be happy to discuss these services with you. If you live in or near Fredericksburg, VA, make an appointment to find out how Lloyd F. Moss Jr., D.D.S., & Lloyd F. Moss III, D.D.S., could help you get the smile you want to have.

The Drawbacks Of Traditional Braces

We want to say up front that braces are a proven and effective way to make your teeth straight. That’s why they are still used by dentists and orthodontists.

This doesn’t mean that braces are perfect, however. Anyone who has worn them can tell you that braces hurt when you first get them and pretty much every time they are adjusted.

Braces also can be highly visible. For some people, this brings unwanted attention or makes them self-conscious about smiling and speaking.

Plus when you have braces, you are supposed to avoid certain foods. This is because those foods could get caught between your braces and your teeth. That could lead to your brackets coming loose or your wires breaking or bending.

And last but not least, braces take time. It’s typical for people to wear braces for two years, although some people do have them for three years or more before their treatment is over.

What Are The Alternatives?

Before we discuss that, think about why you want to straighten your teeth. The primary reason most people want straight teeth, teeth that aren’t crowded together, and teeth that don’t have unwanted gaps between them.

Changing those things is done to improve your smile, and that is what cosmetic dentistry is for.

With short-term orthodontics, you may be able to get what you want in less time than traditional braces.

Here are the ways we may be able to help you:

✦ Invisalign

The average patients who use Invisalign® will take about 12 months to complete his or her treatment. This can vary by a few months either way depending on the specifics of your teeth.

For patients with mild and moderate misalignments, Invisalign can be as effective as braces less time and with some advantages over braces.

For starters, you won’t have brackets or wires attached to your teeth. You will wear clear aligners (sort of like athletic mouthguards) made of plastic over your teeth instead. The aligners blend in with your smile, which makes them much less noticeable while you are wearing them.

You will need to wear the aligners most of the time (22 hours per day), and you will switch aligners every few weeks to keep your teeth moving. Unlike with braces, you will be able to continue eating all your favorite foods since you can remove your aligners to eat and to perform your daily oral hygiene.

✦ Six-Month Smiles

The best way to explain Six-Month Smiles® is to have you look at your smile in the mirror. Look closely. What teeth are visible when you smile?

Six-Month Smiles focuses on moving those teeth — the teeth that you can see when you smile — where traditional braces work to realign all your teeth.

Six-Months Smiles are braces with brackets and wires, but since they are used to move just the smallest and lightest teeth in your mouth, they can change your smile in less time.

As the name suggests, six months is the typical treatment time although it can vary by a couple months either way. Regardless, you can complete this treatment is about a quarter of the time you would be wearing traditional braces.

You also may want to know that Six-Month Smiles use ceramic braces. They aren’t invisible, but they are less noticeable than metal brackets and wires.
