How Soon Do You Want Straight Teeth?

Jim* is a salesperson who has lived with crooked teeth for most of his life.

He has been moderately successful, but one thing has held him back — his smile.

To be more specific, he has held himself back. Jim has the talent to be one of the top salespeople for his company, but he feel self-conscious instead of confident when meeting potential customers.

Jim’s son, James*, is at the age when orthodontic treatment is possible. Jim knows his son inherited his crooked smile, but Jim doesn’t want James to feel held back by his smile as he gets older.

Thankfully, they live near Fredericksburg, VA, and they can visit Lloyd F. Moss Jr., D.D.S., F.A.G.D. & Lloyd F. Moss III, D.D.S. for dental care, including short-term orthodontics.

* Jim and James are not real people, nor are they based on real people, although you may know someone in a similar situation.

Reasons To Get Straightened Out

Whether you are an adult like Jim or a teenager like James, you may be interested in having straighter teeth. There are multiple reasons to consider this.

Let’s start with looks. If we are being honest, this is one of the main reasons people want to have straight teeth. We understand that having straight teeth makes our smiles look nicer.

Whether it’s fair or not, that also affects how we are perceived by other people.

A few years ago, USA Today published the results of a survey of single men and women. Do you know what both groups said was the most important feature they look at in a romantic partner? Teeth.

According to the results, 58 percent of men and 71 percent of women said good teeth are something they expect in a partner.

Another reason to consider straightening your teeth is something we already mentioned — confidence. When you are comfortable with your teeth, you are more likely to smile.

And when you smile more, this makes you appear friendlier to the people that you meet in social and professional settings.

Last, but not least, straight teeth are healthier.

Straight teeth are easier to brush and to floss. This, in turn, makes it easier to remove the bacteria and plaque that lead to problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

Know Your Options

We all know that traditional braces are always an option, but what if you don’t want to wait two years or more for results. What kind of short-term orthodontics are available?

At our Fredericksburg, VA, dental practice, you have your choice between Invisalign and Six Month Smiles. We’ll explain the differences between these options below.

◼︎ Invisalign®

More than likely you know someone who either is wearing braces or has worn braces in the past. You are familiar with the brackets and the wires that are attached to their teeth. This is the mechanism by which that person’s teeth are pushed or pulled into a straighter alignment.

Invisalign works in a different way. This system uses a series of clear aligners to gradually change the position of your teeth. On average, this treatment takes about 12 months, or about half the time of traditional braces.

Each aligner is made of a transparent plastic material. This makes each one practically invisible when you have it in your mouth.

Every aligner pushes your teeth a little closer to their final positions. When your treatment is finished, you will need to wear a retainer for a short amount of time to help you maintain your new smile.

◼︎ Six Month Smiles®

As the name suggests, Six Month Smiles can be completed in half a year for most patients. Knowing this, you may be a little surprised that this system uses brackets and wires similar to traditional braces.

So what makes this different, and how can it work so much faster?

Traditional braces are used to straighten every crooked tooth that you may have, whereas Six Month Smiles is focused on the six teeth in the front of your mouth. Those six teeth are the ones that people are most likely to see when you smile.

These teeth also are smaller and lighter than the molars in the back of your mouth. As a result, these front teeth can be moved more easily.

If you start today, your smile could look dramatically different before the end of the year.
