Life-Changing TMJ Treatment in Fredericksburg, VA

What is TMJ? TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your jaw (the mandible) to the temporal bones of your skull, on each side of your head. Your TMJ is like a hinge that permits your jaw to move so you can talk, chew, yawn, and speak.

What is TMD?

TMD stands for temporomandibular joint disorder. Common causes of TMD are injury, bruxism (grinding the teeth), clenching (often from stress), and arthritis. TMD affects people between the ages of 20 and 40 more than any other age group.

What are the Common Symptoms of TMD?

  • Headaches
  • Neck aches
  • Toothaches
  • Dizziness
  • Pain or swelling on either side of the face
  • Popping sound when you open or close your mouth
  • Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw, neck, and shoulders.
  • Jaw locking up in open or closed position
  • Difficulty opening your mouth wide
  • Hearing problems or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Difficulty chewing or problems with bite

How is TMD Diagnosed?

Dr. Moss will take a complete medical history and perform a thorough exam, checking for problems with how your jaw works, how your bite is (how your teeth line up), and how your facial muscles work. He may also need to take x-rays or CT scans of your whole face to check on the placement of the jaw and surrounding tissues and muscles.

Treatment of TMD

There are home treatments that can help with your symptoms, like taking pain relieving anti-inflammatory drugs and using hot and cold packs, but Dr. Moss can do more for you. He will determine the likely cause of your TMD and recommend treatments that will align the jaw and bite and protect your teeth from grinding and clenching. He may design a splint or night guard to place over your top and bottom teeth to keep them from grinding during the night. If you have major bite or alignment issues, he may recommend orthodontics. If your problems have arisen from missing teeth, he will make a recommendation for implants or another tooth replacement option to restore a normal bite.

Whatever the cause of your TMD, Dr. Moss will be tenacious about finding the root problem and treating the source of your TMJ pain or discomfort. The relief his patients have found has been life-changing. You do not have to suffer anymore.
